FAQ's

How does ScolioGold differ from chiropractic, osteopathic or standard physiotherapeutic techniques?
Standard physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors do not cover scoliosis or other similar spinal problems in sufficient depth during their degree programmes to be able to treat them successfully. This is why all our therapists undergo an extensive 5-6 months training programme, in the specific ScolioGold treatment method following their degree courses. Unlike other popular therapies, ScolioGold is a specific method that is only used to treat patients with spinal conditions (scoliosis, hyper-kyphosis etc.). It is not possible to treat spinal curvatures effectively without a specialised programme.

How can I do the exercises when I am away from home?
There are special “holiday” exercises that are given to each patient, according to their individualised exercise programme. We have even had patients use them whilst travelling the world!!

What is the difference between the ScolioGold treatment offered by Scoliosis SOS and the Schroth method used on the continent?
The difference is the quality of our results. At Scoliosis SOS our results are second to none. ScolioGold is a hybrid of the best non-surgical treatments for spinal curvatures and originated from the Schroth method.
Many people (health professionals and patients) have commented on how our results, at Scoliosis SOS, are so much better than the Asklepios Katharina Schroth Klinik’s results. This is partly due to our high therapist to patient ratio i.e. our class sizes are smaller; 6 or 7 patients to each therapist compared to the 20 patients per therapist they have in Germany.
We have also had English patients who went to Germany several years ago, before Scoliosis SOS opened in the UK, but who have now come to us for follow-up treatment and they have all commented that the treatment given at Scoliosis SOS is of a much higher standard.

Are there any Scoliosis SOS clinics or ScolioGold therapists nearer to me?
At present the only clinic is in Suffolk, UK. Patients travel from around the world to visit Scoliosis SOS, coming from countries as far away as Tanzania, Australia, Japan, New Zealand & the United States of America.

Do I have to attend Scoliosis SOS for 4-weeks, are there shorter courses?
Intensive treatment is required in order to change the shape of a patient’s back, so patients usually come for a total of 4-weeks treatment. This is often taken in one 4-week block or two 2-week blocks. However, it is sometimes possible to adjust treatment times to suit a patient’s requirements.

I feel it is too far to come for a Free Initial Consultation; can it be done another way?
Yes, for our overseas patients and some of those in the UK too, we offer a system of Free “Virtual” Consultations. Patients send photographs, copies of X-rays, details of symptoms and medical history and one of our resident scoliosis consultants will review each patient’s condition.

My consultant/orthopaedic surgeon/GP say that this treatment will not be effective for me, are they right?
Firstly, since your consultant/orthopaedic surgeon/GP has not visited Scoliosis SOS (many have been invited, but none have come; claiming they are too busy to investigate other scoliosis treatments), it is impossible for them to give an accurate, unbiased opinion, as they do not have sufficient knowledge about the ScolioGold method. The only way to determine whether ScolioGold treatment will be effective for you is to have a Free Initial Consultation with one of our resident scoliosis consultants.

I am on the waiting list for surgery; can I still have this treatment?
Certainly – many of our patients have often been referred for surgery for their condition and contact us in desperation to avoid this dangerous operation. It is important to realise that surgery does not cure and only partly straightens the spine; this does not necessarily mean that a patient will be pain free or enjoy a better quality of life following spinal fusion. The aim of ScolioGold treatment is to enable patients to lead a normal life, without the need for invasive spinal surgery.

I have had surgery for my scoliosis, will I still be able to benefit?
ScolioGold treatment can help many post-surgery patients in a number of areas, namely cosmetic and pain reduction. Your ability to benefit from treatment would depend upon the type of surgery, extent of fusion, whether there is any instrumentation still in place and if you had any serious post-operative complications. Please contact us, giving full details of your spinal fusion and we will be able to advise you.

Where is the scientific proof that this method works?
There have been numerous scientific studies supporting the individual non-surgical treatments that comprise the ScolioGold treatment.

Would your treatment benefit me?
To ensure that we only accept patients who will benefit from ScolioGold treatment, it is necessary for all patients to have a Free Initial Consultation or “virtual” consultation. It is at this consultation that one of our specialist scoliosis consultants will determine whether ScolioGold treatment will be beneficial for you.

How much correction will I achieve by doing this treatment?
As each patient’s condition is different, it is impossible to predict the exact outcome of their treatment or to quantify the amount of correction a patient will achieve, as this is dependent upon a number of factors such as patient age, flexibility and severity of condition. Likewise a surgeon will be unable to predict the amount of correction from spinal fusion surgery.
However, once you have had a free initial consultation we will be able to give you a better idea of how ScolioGold treatment could benefit you. In the meantime, the photographs on the results page will give you a rough idea of the type of cosmetic improvement you can expect.

My problem is hyper-kyphosis, how will the programme be different for me?
Our Kyphosis and Back Pain patients follow a slightly different treatment that focuses on encouraging them to stand taller and give them a more upright posture. More details can be found on the {treatment information page}.

What qualifications do the Scoliosis SOS medical staff have?
All the medical staff at Scoliosis SOS are fully trained and certified. They have all graduated from accredited degree courses in physiotherapy. Following these university degrees, they have all completed an extensive 5-6 months training programme in the specific ScolioGold treatment method. They are all registered with appropriate professional and regulating bodies including the General Medical Council, Health Professions Council and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists.

Can I be in the treatment room with my child?
Yes, it is possible. At Scoliosis SOS we encourage parents to become involved in their child’s treatment, as we have found that in order to achieve good long-term results, it is essential to have good parental support. However, it is also necessary for the child to learn to control their own condition and assume some responsibility for their treatment. Therefore we invite parents to attend some treatment sessions – the number will depend on the age and ability of the child and this will be discussed with the parent at the start of treatment.
